WOODEN RACKET TOURNAMENT
Sat 17th Julywooden racket
Celebrating 1925 - when we moved to Southampton St!

YES - you WILL need a wooden racket to take part, and you WILL be expected to adhere to the 1925 dress code...

P.S. if you have any SPARE wooden rackets, please let Alan know (243872)

THE PASSING OF AN ERA...

Was your grandmother a keen tennis player? Do you happen to have any old tennis photos that may be of relevance to the Club? Or documents, or anecdotes perhaps? Those shoe boxes full of old photos are just pining to be rummaged through!

Alan (243872) has kindly taken on the task of building an FTC historical archive. DO get in touch if you think you can help!

TAPE ADJUSTERS: Up until now, the net tape adjusters have only been used for matches. FROM NOW ON we’ll leave them out permanently.

PARKING: Please be aware that the club is still asking members not to park in Southampton Street (PARTICULARLY NOT AT WEEKENDS) as this does upset the residents at times. The Car Park at the Business Centre is a short walk away.

Welcome to the New Season!

spring weather85 years ago - in November 1925 -  the Club moved to the “new” site on Southampton street. Grass courts, long skirts, wooden rackets, and white(s) only of course! Why is this significant? Well,  it’s now looking increasingly likely that development of the NEW “new” site on Steed’s Farm will begin in October, ready for us to be playing on the new courts in the spring of 2011. Led by Anne Sawyer, a small group of FTC members (called the Relocation Committee - see opposite) has been working hard over a number of years to find an alternative location for the club - and again on behalf of all the members, a huge thank you - particularly to Anne. Regular updates on progress are posted HERE.

The possible relocation makes 2010 a very exciting year for the club - and there’s also plenty of other activities to look forward to. We are now working towards Clubmark accreditation, and Mark Mobey has kindly agreed to coordinate this important initiative. Susanna’s coaching sessions go from strength to strength, logo transparent small1with a weekly MIXED session recently added. The Juniors are also well catered for, with regular coaching and tournaments coming up in the Spring & Summer. And we can all now look snappy -  sporting the new bright green logo!

I DO hope that you will all be able to come to the SPRING SOCIAL in the Corn Exchange - on the 24th April (3-5pm). A great opportunity to meet with other members over a cream tea  - and find out about what’s going in the new season!

ANGEL TO THE RESCUE?

We’ve had a thirst-quenching offer from the Portwell Angel: for anyone coming in wearing their new FTC logo (after a match or evening club tennis perhaps?) the draft beer will cost just £2.20 a pint! What do you think - a good idea? This makes the cost of a firkin (72 pints) ....  a little bit more.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS COMING UP!

On Sundays April 11th & June 6th, Faringdon TC is organising tournaments that will take place up on the Community College courts (we’re expecting a good turnout!) There will be competitions for mini-Red, Orange, and Green.  Contact Mark Mobey (242636)  for more details.

On Weds 28th April, there will be an inter-schools tournament for nine local schools at FTC.  Contact Alan (243872) for more details.

Girls Only: Coaching at Junior School beginning end Feb - contact Susanna (241452) for more details.

TENNIS BALLS: Are provided during official Club sessions. Tubes of high quality branded balls can be purchased at the Club house from Andy Sawyer, or Alan Elbourn, or Lin Ross.

Alan & Ray Elbourn’s  father - known to his friends as Cyril - died peacefully in his sleep
just a week after Ray and Alan celebrated their sixtieth birthdays, at the age of 85.
Our sympathies are with the family.
